Elmira man arrested after five-hour police standoff

ELMIRA, N.Y. ( WETM ) — An Elmira neighborhood was blocked off Thursday night into Friday morning after police say a standoff led to the arrest of one man.

According to the Elmira Police Department, 32-year-old Chad Stanbro was arrested following a five-hour standoff that started Thursday night and into Friday morning.

Police say that around 10 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, officers went to a home in the 400 block of West 1st Street for an investigation.

While in the area, officers saw Stanbro, who was known to have a warrant out for his arrests for criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and when he saw police, he ran and locked himself inside his home.

More police were called to the scene, including the SWAT team and crisis negotiation team, and after five hours, Stanbro surrendered.

Stanbro was charged with obstruction of governmental administration, a class A misdemeanor, along with his weapons warrant.

Stanbro is currently held in the Chemung County Jail under a felony warrant.
