ELKTON — An investigation is continuing after a tractor-trailer struck and killed a pedestrian on or along a highway near Elkton early Thursday morning, according to the Maryland State Police.

MSP officials were withholding the name, gender and age of the victim on Thursday afternoon, explaining that next-of-kin notifications were pending.

Troopers assigned to the agency’s North East Barrack rushed to Augustine Herman Highway (Route 213), north of West Lewis Shore Road, south of Elkton, shortly before 4 a.m. on Thursday after receiving a report regarding a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian, police said. Based on the preliminary investigation, police added, a tractor-trailer traveling in the southbound lane of Route 213 inexplicably struck the pedestrian, police added.

The tractor-trailer driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, remained at the crash scene, according to MSP officials.

Emergency workers closed a portion of Route 213 for approximately four hours after the fatal collision, allowing for, in part, an on-scene investigation by an MSP Crash Team, which is trying to determine how the fatal collision occurred and what caused it to happen, police reported. Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration employees responded to the scene to assist with road closures, police noted.

As of Thursday afternoon, the investigation was continuing and no arrests had been filed, police reported.
