ELKTON — A man remained jailed on Thursday after investigators confiscated a long gun, disassembled rifle parts and other evidence while raiding an Elkton apartment, according to Cecil County District Court records.

Investigators identified the suspect as Randy Dale Jones Jr., 39, of Rising Sun.

The investigation leading to Jones’ arrest and the criminal charges against him started on March 19, when Elkton Police Department officers went to a residence in the 400 block of Rudy Park to serve Jones an arrest warrant in connection with a recent domestic-violence case, police said, adding that investigators had received a dispatch indicating that Jones was at that location, police said.

After entering the dwelling, officer checked the apartment to ensure their safety, a technique known as a “protective sweep,” police reported. While doing so, officers saw disassembled rifle parts “in plain view” inside a bedroom and an open backpack containing suspect drugs in the living room, which prompted investigators to obtain a search warrant, court records show.

During a court-approved search of that Rudy Park apartment, investigators found and seized a .22 caliber Winchester rifle, the lower frame of a rifle that lacked a serial number and other plastic gun parts, 58 .22 caliber bullets and one .357 caliber round, according to the charging document, which, based on the criminal charges filed in the case, indicates that they reportedly linked Jones only to the firearm-related evidence.

Investigators contacted the Maryland State Police Gun Center after the raid and requested a check on Jones, police reported. Investigators learned that Jones is prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition because he has had been “convicted of a crime of violence” or a misdemeanor that carries a maximum sentence of more than two years, court records allege.

Jones is facing eight charges in the criminal case relating to the confiscated rifle, firearm parts and ammunition, including possession of a rifle by someone with a disqualifying conviction, possession of a firearm without a serial number and illegal possession of ammunition, according to court records. He remained in the Cecil County Detention Center without bond on Thursday, eight days after his bail review hearing, court records show.

As for the domestic-violence case that had led investigators to that Rudy Park apartment on March 19, Jones is facing 18 criminal charges, including multiple counts of first-degree assault, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, according to court records. A judge denied Jones bond in that criminal case, too, court records show.
