ELKTON — An arson investigation is continuing after someone torched a mailbox outside a home near Elkton on Thursday morning — a crime that was caught on camera, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The homeowner called 911 at 6:46 a.m. Thursday after discovering the burning mailbox in front of the residence in the 100 block of Woodcrest Drive, south of Elkton, prompting an area volunteer fire company to respond, fire officials said. Two firefighters with Chesapeake Volunteer Fire Company extinguished the blaze in approximately one minute, fire officials added.

An MOSFM spokesperson reported that the intentionally-set blaze caused an estimated $100 in damage to the mailbox and that no one was injured.

“On home surveillance, a person was seen walking up to the mailbox and igniting it,” the spokesperson commented.

Fire officials are urging anyone with information that might help investigators identify the person who deliberately started this fire to contact the State Fire Marshal’s Office at 410-386-3050.
