ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — A local man presented a check worth $10,000 to the Friends of the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter (FECCAS) on Tuesday to push them further toward their goal of opening a low-cost spay/neuter clinic.

The animal shelter, located at 135 Sycamore Shoals Drive, would house the spay/neuter clinic next door. According to FECCAS, Carter County is one of the lowest socioeconomic areas in the state. The organization said residents can’t afford to spay or neuter their animals, and it’s led to a constantly increasing overpopulation of feral, stray and abandoned animals.

President of FECCAS Michael Barnett told News Channel 11 that the donor’s name is Louis Green, and he’s been a strong advocate for animals for years.

“It’s been a real blessing; Louis Green, who made this donation, has been an advocate for animals in this community for as long as I’ve known him,” Barnett said. “And that’s many, many years. He’s given in the past very generously. And this donation today will be a good step forward to be able to start putting equipment and furniture and stuff for the inside of the building once we get it erected.”

FECCAS leaders said they hope that creating this low-cost clinic will make spaying and neutering pets easier and more affordable for animal owners in Carter County.

The organization also hosts low-cost animal vaccine clinics in the county throughout the year.
