As construction ramps up on the Wawa store in Elizabeth City, the Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain says it plans to open its first North Carolina store in Dare County next month.

The Wawa store in Kill Devil Hills will open at 1900 Croatan Highway on Thursday, May 16, at 8 a.m. with a grand opening and ribbon cutting to follow at 10 a.m., the company said in a press release.

Meanwhile, work is underway on Wawa stores in Elizabeth City, Wilson and Rocky Mount, the company said. All three are projected to open in the third quarter of this year, but specifically when won’t be released until this summer.

“We can’t wait to open our doors to our new North Carolina friends and neighbors and are excited for the chance to serve new customers and communities with our unique brand of fresh food, beverages and convenience,” said Kim Dowgielewicz, Wawa director of store operations. “As each location opens, we will further solidify our commitment to providing the community with not only a new level of convenience but a strong, committed community partner.”

Wawa’s store in Elizabeth City is being constructed at 406 Halstead Boulevard at the corner of Halstead Boulevard and Ehringhaus Street on the former site of the Pier 17 Restaurant and Bar. The restaurant closed last July.

Wawa said it plans to build at least 80 stores across North Carolina over the next decade, with the first eight to 10 stores opening this year and 15 more in 2025.

According to the press release, Wawa will invest approximately $7 million and employ, on average, 140 contractors and local partners. Once open, each store will employ an average of 35 workers. Wawa said it expects to create more than 2,800 new jobs as a result of its North Carolina expansion.
