There’s Nothing to do in El Paso: Rug tufting workshop

EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — In this week’s There’s Nothing to do in El Paso we featured Made By, a newly opened shop in Central El Paso that specializes in teaching the craft of rug tufting.

Rug tufting is in fact rug making with a help of a tufting gun that weaves threads into a canvas.

The recently opened shop Made By in Central El Paso is run by Marina and Jorge Lopez who moved back to their hometown of El Paso and decided to share their love for rug tufting.

Having lived in Austin, the Lopez family was introduced to tufting and started making rugs as a hobby at home.

“It seemed a little bit intimidating to me at first until we bought our own tufting gun and once I went behind it it’s a really rewarding experience,” said Jorge.

Both he and his wife say the experience is therapeutic and results in a tactile product that you’ve made, which is even more rewarding.

“Your end product will be a rug that you can either use to stand on or you can hang it up on a on the wall. Just a nice art piece that’s personal,” said Jorge.

“It’s a forgiving craft too So if you make a mistake, we can fix it. Even if you were to make a hole in the frame with the testing done, which is possible, we can patch it up and you can keep going further and further,” added Marina.

They host workshops every month that they post on their social media but are also available for individual appointments that you can book on their official website.

Marina said they want to make the space available for other artists who are looking for an art studio as well.
