AI restrictions spread as K-12 school year begins
(The Center Square) – States and school districts across the country are tightening rules on artificial intelligence as the 2026-27 K-12 school year begins, with education leaders citing concerns over student learning, screen time and the risks of rapidly advancing technology. As concerns about AI’s impact on K-12 education have grown, dozens of states have introduced or passed legislation aimed at regulating its use in schools. California In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom has taken steps to restrict AI use as it has become a cause for concern. This past week, Newsom signed Senate Bill 813 and Assembly Bill 1405, which aim at keeping AI accountable through safeguards and auditors. “The concerns raised in recent incidents reinforce what California has long recognized: artificial intelligence holds extraordinary promise, but it must be developed and deployed with meaningful safeguards to protect the public,” Newsom said in a statement , even calling on the federal government to implement national safeguards. The Center Square reached out to the Democratic governor's office for further comment on what this looks like in the K-12 classroom but did not receive a response. The Los Angeles Unified School District told The Center Square that the Generative AI Ad Hoc

PREP FOOTBALL: East comes alive in second half at Rock Springs
CHEYENNE – No. 3-ranked Cheyenne East scored 24 points in the second half of a 31-3 victory Friday at Rock Springs. The Thunderbirds (2-1) led 7-3 at halftime thanks to a Cooper Hassler receiving touchdown. Tyler Stephenson extended the lead to 13-3 with a two-yard touchdown run early in the third. Blake Nuse stretched the lead to 16-3 with a 29-yard field goal. "We talked at halftime and made some adjustments," East coach Chad Goff said. "Rock Springs played great defense on our offense. We'd do something and then penalize ourselves, and Rock Springs made the most of those. "We made adjustments and did what we practiced. I challenged the offensive line. They kept pushing in the second half and that's how we were able to get the yards we got on the ground." East added a Stephenson touchdown and a Hassler two-point conversion for a 24-3 advantage. Rock Springs fumbled on its next possession. Javon Register scored a 35-yard touchdown run on the very next play to make it 31-3. Trace Eldridge sealed the win with an interception.

New University of Wyoming President Shane Reeves continued his tour of first impressions as the late summer months welcomed in the fall semester. This time it was in front of a packed ballroom in the Wyoming Union on campus as he presented his first State of the University address Tuesday afternoon since becoming UW’s 29th president in July. Gov. Mark Gordon was on hand to deliver opening remarks prior to Reeves’ address. Reeves treated the event as a combination of a welcome back to campus for everyone, an update of campus life and another chance to explain what he believes is the future of the university. Advancement was especially highlighted, as higher education faces enrollment pressures, questions about the value of college multiply, changes in the landscape of athletics continue and amid the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in schooling. Gordon welcomed Reeves — a native of Rock Springs who retired from the Army as a Brigadier General after serving as the 15th Dean of the Academic Board at the United States Military Academy at West Point — back to Wyoming and reminded the audience that the university is one of the most important public institutions in the state.
