Names Released In Officer Involved Shooting

EAU CLAIRE (WKBT) -- Police in Eau Claire released the names of those involved in an officer-involved shooting Saturday.

Officers were called to a disturbance at the 2200 block of 2nd Street on the city's west side at 8:50 p.m. As they were investigating, a second disturbance began nearby.

Officer Ariana Down Larson confronted a man, 53-year-old Thomas Burback, who was armed with a revolver.

Police claim Burback pointed the revolver in Officer Down Larson's direction before turning to re-enter the apartment where a disturbance was taking place. Officer Down Larson fired her weapon.

Burback fled back inside and barricaded himself.

Officers evacuated nearby residents as the Eau Claire County Regional SWAT team responded. Crisis negotiators tried to talk Burback out of the apartment. Eventually they used non-lethal gas, after which Burback surrendered.

Police searched the apartment and found the revolver.

The incident is being investigated by the Wisconsin DOJ's Division of Criminal Investigation.

Officer Down Larson is on administrative assignment pending review.

Burback faces failure to comply, possession of a firearm while intoxicated and disorderly conduct.
