Twenty-five and counting
Walking through the entrance gates at Churchill Downs Friday felt in stark contrast to what it was like back on May 2, 1998. That day marked Kentucky Derby No. 1 and helped fulfill a personal goal to be on the scene of America’s greatest race. How it came about has been well told, especially so this week, between organized gatherings and impromptu gatherings with friends.
A celebration of Long Beach High School baseball
Long Beach High School baseball has been taking the field for quite some time. This Saturday, just how long they’ve been around — now 100 seasons — will be celebrated. Long Beach High School Varsity Baseball and Softball teams will be conducting clinics for Little Leaguers on May 4 at noon at Long Beach High School. Additionally, at 1 p.m., there will be a showing of “The History of Long Beach High School Baseball,” celebrating its 100th year in the high school gym.
A year later, racing is still trying to make sense of Churchill Downs deaths
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Last year's Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs saw 143 horses enter the starting gate. Most will remember Mage, who crossed the finish line first in the world's most famous race. But forgotten by all who didn't known them were Chloe's Dream and Freezing Point, who never made it to the finish line, who never made it back to their stall, who were euthanized after suffering life-ending injuries and were the sixth and seventh fatalities in 10 days.
Carey enjoying breakout season
Carey’s girls’ lacrosse team has taken off on a meteoric rise after consecutive 2-11 conference records. Nobody could’ve imagined Carey busting out to eight straight Conference 4 victories to start the 2024 season. Yes, the Seahawks were buoyed by an influx of productive youngsters from last season’s unbeaten JV but this reversal has stunned the lacrosse cognoscenti.
Defensive focus fuels Valley Stream
A contactless sport may not leave much room for aggression but don’t tell that to the Valley Stream District flag football team. After dropping a low-scoring affair to Port Washington, Valley Stream (7-3) exercised its demons by earning its fifth shutout victory of the season on the road to the tune of 30-0 at Westbury April 20.
