Fontes said she arrived home that afternoon to a flood of fire trucks on Roger Williams Avenue, and all she could think about was where her 4-year-old son was.
Her fiancé was able to get him out safely, however, all of their belongings were destroyed.
“I’m thankful everyone survived, including the cats,” she said. “Things can be replaced, but it’s just to know that all those happy memories are gone.”
Fontes told 12 Responds that a complete stranger opened up his summer home to them for the time being, but they’ll need to be out by May.
“At this rate, we are just going to go back to a hotel until we can find something more permanent,” Fontes said, adding that a two-week stay basically costs a month’s rent.
She said she’s applied for several apartments and housing assistance , but is currently on a waiting list.
She turned to 12 Responds because her family needs help.
“I just want a house. I just want, whether it is a two-bedroom, a three-bedroom, a camper at this point, I just need a roof over my kids’ heads,” she said.
Fontes has created a GoFundMe page to help with their expenses.
