Afrofuturism and Quilts at MSU Union

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– The Afrofuturism and Quilts at the Michigan State University Union, physically embody dreaming and communal promise. Dr. Liv Furman, one exhibition artist said the quilt exhibit focuses exclusively on Afrofuturism and is the first of its kind. The artwork suggests a connection to optimism, and crafting, by quilting weaves together: fabric and generations.

“Afrofuturism is a tool of imagining and envisioning different possible futures. So many afrofuturists, especially with the literature that I’ve read, use it to kind of imagine some other possibilities forward, like a black liberated future where our dreams, our people, our children, are all safe and cared for,” said Furman.
