A Walmart employee who first confronted the man who was shot to death by Easley Police outside the store Sunday night says, 30 year old Shawn Anthony Elrod was trying to break a glass case containing ammunition.

The employee says Elrod warned him to back away when he approached acting as if he might've had gun, but returned to attacking the glass with a hatchet he had taken from a store shelf.

Elrod then threatened employees and a manager with it when he headed for the exit as Easley Police arrived. An spokesperson said officers tried to "de-escalate the situation" before Elrod was shot. He died at the scene. No one else was hurt.

SLED, carrying out the routine investigation of an officer-involved shooting, says it was the fourteenth in the state since the first of year, the first for Easley Police.
