Museum of the Albemarle: Old Nags Head lot more remote than today's resort town
It’s almost summertime in Elizabeth City once again, a time when we realize just how lucky we are to live so close to the beach. Summer weekends find many of us heading across the Camden bridge in search of sun, sand and sea. But we’re not the first to seek nearby ocean breezes in the summertime. Nags Head began life as a resort in the 1830s, when a Perquimans County planter built the first summer residence there. Soon other planters in the region followed suit,...
Edenton Memorial Day speakers: Also remember families' sacrifices
EDENTON — A crowd of more than 50 braved drizzling rain on Monday to attend a Memorial Day service sponsored by American Legion Post 40 at Edenton’s Veterans Memorial. As people assembled for the program, the sound system played recordings of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Day of Infamy” speech delivered after the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, and a selection of popular patriotic tunes, including “God Bless America,” “Remember Pearl Harbor,” and “Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition.” ...
Memorial Day speaker: 'Freedom isn't free'
The keynote speaker at Monday’s Memorial Day ceremony in Elizabeth City reminded an audience of about 100 that “freedom isn’t free.” U.S. Marine Corps Master Sgt. Katrina Grayson, who has served nearly 19 years in the military, spoke at the ceremony held at New Hollywood Cemetery, the final resting place in Elizabeth City for many veterans. The ceremony was hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6060. Grayson, who now...
Retired chaplain: 'We must ever forget freedom's price'
A retired U.S. Air Force chaplain urged attendees at Perquimans County’s annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday to never forget “freedom’s price.” Col. Cherri S. Wheeler, who trained approximately 100 chaplains and chaplain assistants and had four combat deployments during her 31-year military career, was the principal speaker at the annual ceremony sponsored by the William Paul Stallings Post #126 and the Reid Louder Post #362 of the American Legion. ...
Edenton: Drawings for park improvements not final designs
EDENTON — Edenton officials are advising residents that “rough drawings” for several town parks now available online are just that — rough drawings. They’re not the final designs of the park improvements the town plans to make. Edenton’s parks are scheduled to receive $500,000 in upgrades thanks to federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act. The upgrades are designed to make town parks safer, more attractive, and more attuned to residents’ needs. Work is expected to start within the next two weeks. ...
