They are locally owned, mostly family‑run establishments that have retained their core identities through transitions in generations and ownership. When you walk through their doors, you feel like you're stepping into somewhere authentic that's stood the test of time. This story focuses on Rochester and its suburbs but we've also included some spots that are worth a short road trip. A few are seasonal, so check their websites and social media for opening dates. Charlie's Charlie Riedel (pronounced REED-uhl) opened his eponymous restaurant on Empire Boulevard in 1969. The family business is now in its third generation. It has been spruced up fairly recently
