Appalachian Community Histories – Batesville, Panola County: Ancient Mounds, Railroads, and the Fight for Civil Rights. In the heart of Panola County, Mississippi, the city of Batesville developed from a small railroad settlement into one of northern Mississippi’s important centers of commerce, government, and community life. Its history stretches far beyond the arrival of the railroad in the nineteenth century, reaching back to Native American communities that occupied the surrounding landscape nearly two thousand years ago. Over the generations, the area witnessed the displacement of the Chickasaw people, the decline of once-prosperous river settlements, the upheaval of the Civil War, the expansion of agriculture and industry, and the long struggle for African American civil rights.

Appalachian Community Histories – Oakland, Yalobusha County: Railroads, the Battle of Oakland, and the Fight for Civil Rights. Along the railroad corridor of northern Mississippi, in the western portion of Yalobusha County, sits the town of Oakland, a community whose history reaches back to the settlement of the region during the 1830s. Although Oakland has never grown into a large municipality, its past reflects many of the developments that shaped Mississippi, including the removal of Native Americans, the expansion of cotton agriculture, the arrival of the railroad, the destruction brought by the Civil War, and the long struggle for civil rights.

In the southwestern corner of Yalobusha County, Mississippi, the community of Scobey developed along a railroad that helped reshape the settlement patterns of northern Mississippi during the nineteenth century. Although its population never approached that of larger towns such as Grenada, Coffeeville, or Water Valley, Scobey became an important local connection between the agricultural countryside and the expanding transportation network that linked Mississippi to markets across the South.

There is something fitting about a bar called The Dame opening its doors inside a building that has spent more than a century collecting stories. At 69 E. Pontotoc Ave., just off South Main Street in Downtown Memphis, the Hotel Pontotoc has never been an ordinary address. Built in 1906, the historic building has passed through a colorful succession of identities, including a bordello, a Turkish bathhouse and a nightclub. It also carries a particularly intriguing piece of Memphis lore: the rumor that Elvis Presley lost his virginity there in 1953.
