Horse, owner escape serious injury after accident along trail at Douglas State Forest

DOUGLAS — Sara DiPietro of Burrillville, Rhode Island, and her 23-year-old horse, Hunter, escaped serious injury when the horse stumbled on a rock and went down while they and a small group were walking the Saddle Trail Wednesday afternoon at Douglas State Forest.

DiPierto was pinned under Hunter for "a good hot second" before the horse's attempts to get up freed her. It would be an hour and a half, and the inspiration of having several members of the Douglas Fire Department and the Department of Conservation and Recreation standing around him, before the horse got up on its own.

"He was situated in such a way that when their body is downhill from their legs they can't get up. My saddle was under him so he couldn't roll down the hill. He couldn't go up and he couldn't go down," DiPietro said.

Hunter had just some dirty knees and a small abrasion on his leg at the cannon and walked out of the woods on his own power.
