The Colorado State Patrol on Thursday released a list of the counties where they investigated the highest number of distracted driving crashes last year.The top five counties where the 2023 data shows "inattentive to driving" crashes appear to have happened were Adams County (1), Douglas County (2), El Paso County (3), Jefferson County (4) and Larimer County (5). "Driving should never come second to any other task in the car," said Col. Matthew C. Packard, the chief of the CSP. The data also shows that the highest number of distracted driving incidents in Colorado were in the summer and that people in their 20s and 30s were responsible for the highest number of incidents. "Remember, we are all out on the roads together. There's no lane reserved for you, so you can drive distracted safely. Make driving your primary focus and arrive safely at your destination," CSP said in a news release. Packard said troopers investigated a total of 566 distracted driving crashes last year where there was a major injury or someone was killed.
Man who shot at Douglas County deputies sentenced to 20 years in prison
Jorge Armando Guzman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting at a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy during a pursuit on Sept. 5, 2021. Guzman, 42, was sentenced after pleading guilty to several charges. Guzman and his co-defendant, Melinda Maldonado, 40, were trying to steal parts from a vehicle in Highlands Ranch and tried to get away when the homeowner yelled at them. When deputies tried to stop the car, Maldonado, who was driving, refused to stop and Guzman started firing the gun at deputies. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed and the two were arrested. Douglas County man sentenced to 20 years after shooting at deputies
An 18th Judicial District judge sentenced a Douglas County man to 20 years in prison after he was convicted of shooting at sheriffs deputies during a pursuit. Judge Ryan Stuart sentenced 42-year-old Jorge Armando Guzman to two decades in the Department of Corrections Tuesday on charges of attempted first-degree murder, vehicular eluding and possession of a weapon by a previous offender following a pursuit near Highlands Ranch in 2021.
