PORT DICKINSON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) — Anyone who’s wondered what the insides of some of our area’s large historic churches look like will get their opportunity this weekend.

Community Baptist Church of Port Dickinson is a first-time participant in the annual Sacred Sites tour. It’s one of 23 local houses of worship that will open their doors to the public this Sunday.

Community Baptist was founded in 1884 and the current brick building was constructed in 1922. It features a baptistry where members undergo full immersion baptism. Noted local artist Marian Simpson painted the mural behind it.

Bob Seidel grew up in the church and is a member of its Board of Trustees. He says the most popular feature are the stained glass windows which were crafted by William Diener and Sons of Binghamton. The windows were paid for by members whose names are listed below them.

“If the sun is out, shining brightly, our beautiful stained glass is just remarkable. And, the original members, it’s interesting. It’s good to be part of the lasting history of our church,” Seidel said.

The church still boasts its original Moller Pipe Organ, although the console was replaced in the 1980’s. The American Baptist church also has a Steinway piano and its pastor plays the guitar.

Ron Borgna is the chair of the Sacred Sites committee of the Preservation Association of the Southern Tier which sponsors the walk. He says many of the sites will offer guided tours, historical displays, music, refreshments and information about their work in the community.

“They will also tell people that these churches are evolving. They will tell people about outreach programs they have and ministries that they have in the neighborhood and in the community,” Borgna said.

Community Baptist will offer tours of its sanctuary as well as its archival room and offer light refreshments from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.. Hours at each location vary.

You can find a schedule at PASTNY.org. The tours are free and open to the public without reservation.
