DICKINSON, ND ( KXNE T) — High school students attended an exposition hosted at the Southwest Area Career and Technical Education (SWCTE) Academy in Dickinson on Wednesday, May 1, to explore job opportunities awaiting them after they graduate.

Rylen Swensrud who attended the Expo, is a Senior at Dickinson High School and currently enrolled in learning automotive mechanics at the academy.

Swensrud says his training at the academy has led him to consider a career in automotive mechanics — he’s already working alongside a technician at a local mechanic shop.

“Right now I do several services, so usually on my own, I do brakes, service transmissions and oil changes,” he explained. Swensrud finds the experience he has already gained as very beneficial.

“I think it’s phenomenal, because it can set you up for your future. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to actually be here and be career ready right after high school. I don’t have to run around and just knowing that college isn’t the only option,” he added.

Naomi Lefor is attending the academy like Swensrud, but Naomi is enrolled in the culinary arts program. She is not sure whether she will pursue a career as a chef, but she says learning the trade has helped her to compete and earn state champion for her culinary skills.

“I’m so glad they built this area because they’re more able to cater towards careers in the future, rather than kind of like putting your hours in high school. So, it helps you reach further along with what you want to learn and experience out of high school,” expressed Lefor.

Chris Kovash, Community Outreach Coordinator for Southwest SWCTE, says the academy allows high schools students, like Lefor and Swensrud the opportunity to earn elective credits in learning various trades while still attending high school.

“They can get that hands-on experience in an actual business and then have the idea that’s what they want to do and continue on after that.”

Kovash adds that drafting, early childhood development and diesel mechanics are just a few of the many trades that students can learn at the academy.
