DICKINSON, ND ( KXNET ) — After a short vehicle pursuit and standoff, a Dickinson man was brought into custody.
According to police, the driver was creating traffic issues late Monday afternoon near I-94 Exit 61. Police had been looking for a white GMC Sierra pickup that was connected to a string of overnight burglaries in the Dickinson area, and believed the pickup had been at or near the scene.
Around 3:25 p.m., a police officer found the pickup in the 2100 block of 6th Avenue West and tried to conduct a traffic stop. The driver then fled south and turned into a parking lot near Astoria Hotel.
The driver tried to get away by crashing through a chain link fence and driving down an embankment toward I-94 — but before the driver could reach the highway, he became stuck in the ditch. A standoff lasting about 30 minutes began, and the vehicle’s dark window tint prevented officers from being able to see inside.
Due to caution, officers stayed at a safe distance, and eventually contacted the driver by phone. After a short negotiation, he got out of the vehicle and was placed into custody.
The 33-year-old Dickinson man was brought to St. Alexius Hospital for medical clearance, and then taken to the Southwest Multi-County Correctional Center. He is allegedly facing charges of Fleeing or Attempting to Elude an Officer and Reckless Driving
The burglary cases remain an active investigation. Charges could be added or changed as the investigation continues.
