MV Water Authority customers will pay more next year

Water rates will go up 5% next year for the Mohawk Valley Water Authority’s 128,000 customers in Oneida and Herkimer counties. The board unanimously approved the increase without discussion as well as a Fiscal Year 2027 budget of $32.6 million at its meeting on Oct 19 at Utica City Hall. The vote followed a public hearing on the proposed rate hike on Oct. 14, at which some residents criticized the rate hike. The hike works out to about $1.92 a month or $23 a year for the average household, according to the MVWA. The rate hike is one of the remedies the board is using to address rising costs for water treatment, debt service, operations, employee health coverage and state pension plan payments. Water consumption is not expected to increase next year. Micron Technology has made an investment in critical mineral processing and high-purity materials manufacturing that is expected to support the expansion of Indium Corporation’s capabilities in Central New York, restarting domestic processing of critical minerals essential to advanced semiconductor manufacturing. “Indium Corporation has been a leader in advanced manufacturing for 90 plus years and this collaboration with Micron not only strengthens Oneida County’s partnership with Onondaga County, but benefits all of Central New York and the Mohawk Valley," Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente Jr. said in a statement on the investment.
