High school football: Breaking down the top games in Round 1
Coach Andrew Micovich says Milford can celebrate all its accolades at the football banquet in a few weeks. Right now, the team is focused on making a deep playoff run. And thanks to the buy-in Micovich has gotten from his players since workouts started last November, Milford will have plenty to celebrate. That includes winning its first league championship in 20 years last week. Northern Michigan commit Hudson Smith threw a game-winning 14-yard touchdown pass to Dawson Thomas to help Milford (8-1) upset Walled Lake Western, 31-28, and win the Lakes Valley Conference title. It shared the championship with South Lyon. Milford’s last league title came in 2006, when it shared the Kensington Valley Conference championship with South Lyon. But the accolades don’t stop there. Milford is 24 points away from tying the program record for most points in a season with 379, set during a 9-3 campaign in 2005. It has also qualified for the playoffs for the sixth time in seven years, another program mark. The victory over Western also marked Micovich’s 30th win since he was promoted to head coach in 2022.
