Detroit Lions GM explains why Jared Goff extension isn't done yet

After three impressive years with the Detroit Lions , quarterback Jared Goff has earned the right to get an extension from the team, but the deal hasn't happened yet.

Meanwhile, the Lions have rightly locked up two of their franchise cornerstones in wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and right tackle Penei Sewell.

When asked about Goff getting an extension at some point, general manager Brad Holmes said he believes Goff has earned one, while adding that "it's a high priority" for the team.

“First and foremost (Jared Goff) earned an extension, and it’s important, it’s a high priority for us," Holmes said on Costa & Jansen with Heather on Thursday. "Both sides are working really, really hard. These things just take time.”

“In a perfect world, we would’ve had all three of them done. Bang, bang, bang,” Holmes added . “But these things just kind of take a while, especially with the quarterback market, but I do have faith that it’s gonna get done.”

Last month, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that no deal was imminent between the two sides and things were not close to getting done.

As far as how much we can expect Goff to get, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported the deal could be between $45-50 million annually.

Goff briefly touched on the subject last month, also, and made it clear he wants to stay in Detroit. He added that "there's been discussions" but didn't go into more detail.

After Holmes' comments on Thursday, it feels like a Goff extension is a matter of when, not if.
