The Detroit Animal Care and Control (DACC) shelter is ramping up a dog adoption campaign as it starts its move to a bigger facility .
The big picture: The new building is expected to help alleviate challenges, like lack of space, at the current facility.
- Intakes at shelters nationwide reached new heights last year, including at DACC, which was over capacity and seeing higher euthanasia rates, Axios Detroit reported in August .
- As of last July, DACC had 171 dogs, over its approximately 84-dog capacity. As of last week, it had 104 and a goal of adopting out 80.
State of play: DACC is always looking to adopt out pets, but "we're taking this opportunity to beef up those efforts" with additional advertising and events, Crystal Perkins, director of the General Services Department over DACC, tells Axios.
- The Bissell Pet Foundation is covering adoption fees through May 15.
The latest: The moving process is expected to be complete by the end of May, Perkins says.
- During the transition, DACC will operate out of both facilities.
What they're saying: "That's why we're trying to also push out [adoption events] … We want to make sure we have the least amount of dogs in the facility as possible, so we can start moving equipment over to the new location," Perkins says. "If that medical equipment is not there, we don't want to run into a situation where a dog is in need and we're not able to provide for them."
How it works: Those interested can check out the Friends of DACC's website , arrange meet-and-greets with dogs in foster homes or visit the shelter daily 11am-3pm.
Catch up quick: The new DACC campus near the I-75/I-94 interchange is nearly twice as big as its current headquarters, with 30,000 square feet, a more than 200-animal capacity, a modern vet clinic and larger outdoor exercise areas.
- It was supposed to open a year ago but was delayed by contractor and design changes.
