New Social Hub Coming to Detroit This Spring

Self-pour beer, great food, and coffee come together at The Social Brews , a new social hub coming to downtown Detroit this spring. The unique space, with a beer hall, full bar, coffee shop, communal seating, event space, outdoor patio seating, and more, is bringing its one-of-a-kind experience to the heart of the financial district, right across from Huntington Place.

Co-owner Sanjay Patel of Cincinnati said The Social Brews has been in the works for nearly five years. The self-pour beer hall, featuring 45 taps of rotating local and imported brews, was central to its development.

“We wanted this space to be comfortable but personal, which is where we came up with the self-pour idea,” Sanjay said in an interview with Hour Detroit . “We want to give people a sense of control over their experience, whether they came to our space to watch a Tigers’ game, to go on a date, or to read a book, and the self-pour does just that.”

The Social Brews has three major components: the self-pour beer hall, the full-service bar area, and the event space. Wooded tables, acoustic panels, tall ceilings, and comfortable furniture combine the three areas. The space also includes a full cafe, a kitchen, and a large patio for seasonal outdoor seating.

Co-owner Nisharth Patel has been involved in the Detroit restaurant and business industry for over a decade. The two met while they were both exploring their businesses. Nisharth said the decision to open the bar in downtown Detroit was a priority, as both him and Sanjay love the crowd.

“Detroit has had its ups and downs in the past, but we found this space to be the perfect addition for the community to come together and socialize, from your morning cup of coffee to your first few beers of the night,” Nisharth said. “With Sanjay’s experience in hospitality and my experience in the restaurant and bar scene, we decided to partner up and create The Social Brews.”

Another unique aspect of The Social Brews is its rotating chef and mixologists. To showcase the best culinary talents Detroit has to offer, the kitchen will seasonally bring in chefs, and the bar will bring in a variety of mixologists. Guests can expect a diverse and ever-changing food and drink menu that reflects the city’s rich cultural heritage.

“We had the idea of rotating mixologists and chefs, not only so our guests could always experience something new, but also because we want to highlight the talent of Detroiters in the food and drink industry,” Sanjay said. “We want to interact with smaller businesses, like food trucks, to give them a space so they can carry their experience to their own brick-and-mortar.”

As The Social Brews is housed across the street from Huntington Place, Nisharth and Sanjay wanted to provide a space for visitors traveling to the center to get a taste of Detroit and its locally made food and drinks while nurturing those who call Detroit home.

“We want to bring this platform to the city so that new chefs can come into our space to test their food for a short period with minimal investment on their backs,” Nisharth added. “As we expect Detroiters and visitors alike to come to this space, it’s like our way of giving back to the community.”

In addition to the food and drinks, The Social Brews will be a hub for local music performances and other social events. A stage in the bar area and patio will allow live music and plans for bartender competitions, latte art competitions, karaoke, comedy, trivia, and more are in the works. The Social Brews will also offer an event space for corporate meetings, private meetings, and parties.

“We want our guests to walk out of our space happier than they were when they walked in,” Sanjay said. “If they’re already happy when they walk in, we want them to feel like they’ve had nothing to drink, but they’re drunk.”

The Social Brews is set to open in late May.
