    A 26-year-old motorcyclist dies in Des Moines' 5th traffic-related crash of the year

    A 26-year-old Des Moines man died from injuries in a motorcycle collision on Friday.

    The man, identified as Nicholas Edward Perez, was driving a Honda dirt bike southbound on Southwest Ninth Street and crashed into the passenger side of an SUV that was crossing the street, westbound, at Payton Avenue, according to a news release from the Des Moines Police Department.

    Des Moines Police Department patrol officers and Des Moines Fire Department responded to the collision about 8:15 p.m. Friday.

    First responders began lifesaving measures for Perez, who was transported to a local hospital where he died.

    This incident is the city’s fourth traffic-related fatality involving a motorcycle and the fifth traffic-related fatality of 2024, according to the news release.

    Perez was not wearing a helmet, according to the news release.

    The Des Moines Police Department Traffic Unit continues its technical investigation of this incident.
