DEPOSIT, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) — A Deposit man is being held responsible for the death of a child in Deposit on Friday, New York State Police say.

According to police, troopers responded to an address on Fair Street after a toddler became unresponsive. After an investigation, James Christ Jr., 26, of Deposit, was arrested and charged with Assault in the First Degree as well as Manslaughter in the Second Degree for “recklessly” causing the death of the child.

Christ Jr. was arrested late Friday, May 10, arraigned at Central Arraignment and Processing, and taken to Delaware County Jail on no bail.

Christ Jr. was also accused of, and pled guilty to, stabbing a man in the back several times in Binghamton in December, 2017. His felony hearing is currently scheduled for Friday, May 17.

Neighbors say Christ and his female partner often fought and that police had been called to their apartment numerous times. Dawn Doty lives at Meadow Park. She says Delaware County Child Protective Services, or CPS, had also visited the family before.

“CPS has been called for problems, cops have been called. Nothing got done. The little boy’s life could have been saved if everybody believed ‘see something, say something.’ We do see something and we do say something but nothing happened, nothing gets done,” Doty said.

The investigation is ongoing, stay with NewsChannel 34 for more information as it is made available.
