    DENVER ( KDVR ) — This weekend will be nice and sunny , with highs in the upper 60s and 70s in the Denver weather forecast.

    It might be a good weekend for some yard work or gardening, as the best time to put plants in the ground is here for some, and quickly approaching for others.

    Aside from the weather, there are plenty of reasons for Coloradans to get out this weekend with numerous Star Wars events for May the 4th, Cinco de Mayo events and more.

    Here are some entertaining things happening in the Denver metro area this weekend.

    Cinco de Mayo festivities and deals in Denver

    On May 5, 1862, Mexico defeated France in the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. According to the History Channel, the holiday is relatively minor in Mexico , but in the U.S. it has evolved into a day to celebrate and commemorate Mexican culture and heritage.

    Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexican culture, not independence

    The Cinco de Mayo festival is happening this weekend at the Civic Center in Denver and includes a parade, car show, dog races and more. Here is the schedule for this weekend:

    There will be a children’s area on both days near Broadway, south of 14th Avenue.

    Additionally, there will be multiple stages with live entertainment on both days, featuring local bands and performers playing old-school music, covers, funk, pop, Latin and more. A full schedule of Cinco de Mayo performances can be found online.

    The festival includes many vendors, exhibitors and food options as well.

    Denver is a good place to be on May 4 if you are a Star Wars fan. Here are some Star Wars events happening this weekend:

    Barbie Dreamhouse pop-up truck visiting Denver

    A Barbie Dreamhouse on wheels is stopping in Denver this weekend in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Barbie moving into her very first dream house.

    Barbie’s creator grew up in Denver — and a character in the movie is based on her

    The pop-up Barbie van will be at Park Meadows Mall from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

    There will be Barbie-themed apparel, home goods and accessories inspired by a day in the life of Barbie.

    First Friday art walks

    Denver’s art districts become open-door art exhibits on the first Friday of every month. You’ll find musicians performing live and open doors to galleries and art installations lining the streets of the River North Art District and Santa Fe Art District.

    Denver mulch and compost giveaway

    The Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has a gift for those who want to play in the dirt and do some yard work this weekend.

    DOTI is hosting its annual mulch giveaway on Saturday, but this year they have added compost to the mix. The mulch comes from trees that were dropped off after the holiday season.

    The giveaway is for Denver residents only, and proof of residency will be required.

    How to get free mulch

    Dig-your-own mulch will be available while supplies last from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at two locations:

    • Denver Central Platte Campus, North Entrance
      • Enter through the campus gates at 2000 W. 3rd Ave., turn right at the stop sign and follow the signs for the mulch giveaway
      • Compost also available at this location
    • Havana Nursery
      • 10450 Smith Rd.
      • Freeloading service available for trucks and small, one-axle trailers

    Be sure to bring your own supplies, like a rake or a shovel, as well as containers for loading mulch or a tarp to cover trucks and trailers.

    How to get free compost

    Compost made from food scraps and yard waste collected by Denver’s Compost Collection Program is up for grabs for this year only.

    Front Range farmers market 2024 opening dates

    A limited number of coupons for free compost are available. Those who wish to take some of the compost must register to receive a coupon , which can be done online. Coupons will not be given out onsite.

    Those who sign up for the coupon should receive an electronic confirmation number from Solid Waste Management. Be sure to bring that confirmation number, along with a shovel, proof of residency and a five-gallon bucket. There is a limit of one five-gallon bucket of compost per resident.

    Dig-your-own compost will be at the Denver Central Platte Campus, located at 1271 W. Bayaud Ave., from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
