Akron voters approve charter amendments on housing, policing
Despite opposition from developers , the police union and even the mayor , Akronites voted on Election Day to amend the city charter, upending the status quo. With all precincts reporting, voters have passed two amendments relating to housing, and one bolstering the city's police oversight board. Freedom BLOC, a nonprofit group that focuses on economic and social issues, along with other local organizations, collected the required signatures to put the issues on the ballot . Opponents said the measures will cause rents to skyrocket and scare off developers, while advocates say they're necessary to make sure everyone gets a fair shake at finding housing. Before Freedom BLOC's watch party at the Posh Venue wrapped at 10 p.m. Nov. 3, and before all precincts were reporting, Freedom BLOC Executive Director Ray Greene Jr. addressed the crowd. He praised the team that put in the legwork, knocking on doors and collecting signatures to put the measures on the ballot. "I am beside myself with excitement," he said. "I don't even care about the numbers. I really care about this room. Like we did that." The crowd erupted in cheers. "Nothing else matters,"
