Major Chestnut Run Energy project progressing in Carroll County

CARROLLTON – The Chestnut Run Energy power plant in Carroll County is moving ahead after receiving the required state approvals this year. "We have also secured a reservation for the project’s turbines and major equipment, an important step given today’s industry-wide supply constraints," spokeswoman Janine Saunders said in a prepared statement. The Ohio Power Siting Board authorized the construction of Chestnut Run Energy in late August with a certificate of environmental compatibility and public need. The board undertakes a public review before deciding whether to grant the certificate for any new, major utility project. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency also issued the project an air permit in March. Matt Butler, spokesman for the state Public Utilities Commission, said in mid-October that the only requirement left was a conference between the board's staff, company and contractors to show that any pre-construction conditions have been met. "There are no additional approval steps here at the board," he said in an email. Saunders said the power plant will supply "lower-carbon electricity to the regional grid" and bring jobs and new tax revenue to Carroll County. "These milestones reflect years of close work with state regulators, local officials and residents, whose input helped shape

One Ohio Marketplace Combines a Massive Indoor Shopping Center With an Outdoor Flea Market

A hardware store, a Fiesta dinnerware shop, and rows of outdoor flea market tables all share one property. That combo alone made me stop and look twice. Inside, a big building holds dozens of shops, bakeries, and food counters. Outside, open-air vendors set up with produce, collectibles, tools, and plenty of things nobody needs but everybody wants.

Stark-based Timken Co. suing to prevent auto 'supply chain hostage'

JACKSON TWP. – The Timken Co. has filed a lawsuit against the Pennsylvania-based Meadville Forging Co. "to stop a supplier from holding an automotive supply chain hostage." The Jackson Township-based manufacturer of engineered bearings and industrial motion products originally filed the complaint in federal court and then refiled it Nov. 2 in Stark County Common Pleas Court . Meadville Forging's general partner, Keller Group Services, is an Ohio corporation. Meadville Forging Co. is the sole source of forged cups and hubs that Timken uses to assemble wheel bearing hubs for the Ford Motor Co.'s F-150 and Ranger Super Duty trucks, Expedition and Navigator SUVs, and the Bronco Raptor off-road SUV. According to the complaint, the forging company stopped shipping parts to Timken on Oct. 29 after demanding a lump-sum of $8 million; a 48% price increase with pass-through costs for steel, freight and processing; and other terms. The parts are delivered on a "just-in-time basis," so Timken does not have significant inventory. The company has 34 open purchase orders for Meadville Forging parts valued at $3.8 million. "Because MFC stopped shipping, Timken's bearing-assembly production for Ford will begin to stop as soon as November 6, 2026, and shipments to Ford

Glass vs. metal air fryers. Weighing the benefits and risks

When I suggested teaching an air fryer workshop at the Coshocton County District Library last spring, I never imagined how popular the topic would be. After teaching four programs throughout the county this year to more than 100 people, I am feeling more confident than ever the air fryer is here to stay. One of the main reasons is convenience, especially in cooking for one or two people. There are different styles of air fryers offering different advantages. The basket type is one of the most common. The drawer-like basket can hold foods helpful to toss or easily turn like vegetables or chicken. The other most common style looks like a larger toaster oven. It often has a glass front door and is nice for items that are easy to place on the racks. I had an excellent question at one of the recent air fryer classes about the new basket type air fryers that use a glass bowl rather than metal. Is there an advantage? Is this the wave of the future with air fryers? The glass bowl is one of the latest product changes in response to consumer concern over PFAS, per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances. These are often called

Asbestos cost dispute leads Coshocton land bank to change contractors

COSHOCTON − The Coshocton County land bank is moving asbestos removal work on two demolition projects to a different contractor after obtaining estimates that could save more than $26,000, prompting a dispute with the company originally awarded the jobs. The work will be completed with funding from the Ohio Department of Development. At its August meeting, the land bank awarded seven demolition projects to Land Clearing Specialists. The company later hired Aster Oilfield Services of Bellaire as a subcontractor for the work. More: Land bank reviews bids for 10 property demolitions across Coshocton Co. Aster came back with a change order for three structures related to asbestos removal. Asbestos work estimates were $21,440 for 55668 Township Road 154, $13,246 for 28099 County Road 12 and $12,944 for 28009 Township Road 281. Tiffany Swigert, director of the Coshocton Port Authority and land bank board member, said the size of the asbestos change orders prompted the land bank to seek a second opinion. Estimates from Ohio Technical Services were $6,200 for Township Road 154 and $2,400 for County Road 12. The company has not issued an estimate for Township Road 281 yet.
