Then, a growth spurt in his freshman year at the University School of Jackson sprouted him to 6-foot-6. That new-found height and a natural ability to catch the ball was enough for Bruins coach Derrick Pritchard to suggest Payne consider playing tight end instead. “I was really looking at where he’s going to be four years from now,” Pritchard said. “There aren’t many 6-foot-7, 6-foot-8 quarterbacks running in Division I. The decision to switch Payne has paid dividends for the Bruins (7-1), with Payne adding to a productive season with a four-catch, 88-yard performance in a 37-0 win over 4A Dyer County (3-5) on Oct. 16. Payne, a three-star tight end ranked as the No. 27 junior recruit in the state by 247Sports , has received offers from Tennessee, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Iowa State and Missouri, among other Power 4 programs. He will spend Oct. 17 in Athens, Ga. as top-ranked Georgia hosts Auburn. “I’m so blessed,” Payne said of his recruitment
