McKenzie football, Cole Brown motivated by state title loss in win over Bruceton
McKenzie was not itself in a 42-14 loss to South Pittsburg in last season’s 1A state championship game. The team lacked the physicality that has been its trademark since coach Keith Hodge took over in 2024. Now, the Rebels remind themselves of the bitter taste the state championship loss left in their mouths before every game. “Every pre-game speech, it’s getting brought up,” Cole Brown said. “It’s fuel for the game." That motivation pushed the Rebels (6-2, 3-0 in Region 6-1A) to a 63-0 win over Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central (4-4, 1-2) in McKenzie’s final regular-season game at Rebel Stadium on Oct. 9. Brown, a senior quarterback, was 13-of-16 for 336 yards and six touchdowns in one half. Brown also had a rushing touchdown, plus a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown on defense. Brown took over for current UT Martin quarterback Tate Surber as McKenzie’s starter last season. Through eight games this season, Brown has 2,201 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns. “Cole’s got some experience under his belt now,” Hodge said. “He made some really good throws tonight. He looked really poised.” High School Football: North Side football wins Jackson Commissioner's Cup behind father-son duo Brown

North Side football wins Jackson Commissioner's Cup behind father-son duo
After North Side finished its 42-6 rout of Liberty Magnet to claim the Madison County Commissioner’s Cup, the Indians huddled around and hoisted the silver trophy, which had been delivered in a police helicopter before kickoff at Liberty on Oct. 7. Standing in the center of the celebrations were coach Woodrow Lowe Jr., and his son Wade Lowe, who led North Side (5-2) from under center in the win. Lowe, a junior, threw for 152 yards and two touchdowns in one half of action against Liberty (6-1). With North Side up 35-0 entering the second half and the running clock rule in effect, Lowe and other North Side starters were pulled from the game. Braydon Weldon accounted for three touchdowns, including a 70-yard kickoff return TD to open the second half. High School Sports: The most thorough local sports coverage in the region, from clubs through varsity. North Side won its second consecutive Commissioner’s Cup, going 3-0 against South Side, Jackson Central-Merry and Liberty. The trophy has been awarded to the best team in head-to-head competition between the Jackson-Madison County Schools with football programs since 2017. Woodrow Lowe is not a Jackson native, but he knows the importance the trophy

Joe Cole, Trinity Christian football delivers Jackson Christian first TSSAA loss
For his first two seasons with Trinity Christian's football team, Joe Cole waited patiently for his opportunity in the Lions' backfield. As a freshman, Cole sat behind current Louisville freshman Lekhy Thompson. After Thompson left for IMG Academy in 2025, Cole sat as the backup to Hank Miller, who went on to play at Carson-Newman. Now, as a Junior, Cole is seizing his chance to be the Lions' lead running back. He rushed for 226 yards and two touchdowns as TCA (5-1, 3-1 in DII-A West) handed Jackson Christian (6-1, 2-1) its first loss of the season, 28-14, on Oct. 1. TCA coach Darren Bowling leaned heavily on Cole as the game entered its final stretch. Cole gained 143 of his yards in the second half and had five straight carries to seal the game on the Lions’ final drive. “I was ready,” Cole said. “I knew tonight was going to be one of those nights, got to pound them in the mouth.
