The Burlington Police Department is warning the public about a recent phone scam. The HawkEye reports that the police department posted on Facebook that someone has been calling individuals, claiming to be the Chief of Police, and telling callers they are in contempt of court and owe money. Burlington police say the scammers are then requesting payments from those they are calling and providing fake case numbers to attempt to appear legitimate. The police department reminds you they do not make phone calls like that, and encourage you to simply hang up if you receive one.

The trial of a Burlington man accused of murdering a local D.J. on Christmas night 2024 has been rescheduled for May. 48-year-old Eric Rios is charged with first-degree murder for the shooting death of Anthony “D.J. Ant Bomb” Campbell. The HawkEye reports Rios’ jury trial is now scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 4 at the Des Moines County Courthouse in Burlington. At around 7:35 p.m. Dec. 25, 2024, police were called to 1801 Madison Ave. in Burlington after Campbell’s girlfriend reported seeing him on the ground inside his home with blood on the floor. She told investigators she and Campbell had been involved in an ongoing custody dispute with Rios, her ex-husband. Since entering his plea, Rios’ trial has already been continued five times.

The Fort Madison City Council was supposed to host a public hearing this past Monday night on a draft ordinance aimed at regulating data centers and other industrial and business structures within city limits. But that public hearing was canceled because the city planning and zoning department opted to postpone making a recommendation on that ordinance proposal. Instead, the council received a formal update on P&Z’s progress on the topic. The HawkEye reports members of the public were concerned earlier this year after details of a possible data center operation being constructed at 2201 S. Business 61–or “Burlington Hill”–just outside the Fort Madison city limits became publicly known.The Lee County Board of Supervisors passed a one-year moratorium on data center construction back in June, and the Burlington Hill project is now on hold. But P&Z also began working with city staff in July to help craft an amendment to existing city code that could regulate both data centers and other large business and industrial facilities.
