After Fennimore scored a total of seven runs in the first two innings, the Deerfield baseball team relied on the strong pitching of junior Luke Sigurslid to pull out a 12-8 win on Monday, May 6 at Deerfield High School.

Sigurslid pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief, holding the Golden Eagles to just one run and recorded six strikeouts in the win.

Trailing 12-8 in the seventh, Fennimore had its first two batters reach base, but Sigurslid recorded back-to-back strikeouts and a flyout to clinch the Deerfield win.

With Sigurslid holding the Golden Eagles’ offense down, Deerfield was able to chip away at the early Fennimore lead. The Demons scored three runs in the first and second innings, while adding a run in the third to tie the game at 7-7.

In the fourth, junior Bryce Eickhoff hit an RBI single to score senior Jackson Drobac and give Deerfield an 8-7 lead.

During the next at-bat in the fourth, junior Stephen Bagley hit a two-run homer to score Eickhoff. Senior Austin Anderson also reached on an error that scored junior Mesfin Drexler, giving Deerfield an 11-7 lead.

After Fennimore added a run in the top of the sixth, Deerfield got the run back in the bottom of the frame when Drexler scored off an error from a ground ball hit by senior Kris Hahn.

Drexler, who came off the bench to fill in for sophomore Landon Brattlie, went 3x3 with two doubles, a walk and four runs scored.

Bagley led the Demons with three RBIs, while Eickhoff and Drobac both had two RBIs. Anderson, senior Adam Suess and junior Aiden Brown also drove in a run.

Deerfield is 10-5 on the season and 7-0 in the Trailways-South Conference.
