    Restaurant Rundown: 3 restaurants close, while 11 new open in Daytona, Flagler area

    As the local dining scene continues to evolve in the Sunshine State, we are inevitably thrilled to say hello to new restaurants and disheartened to say goodbye to old favorites.

    Throughout the month, while some restaurants closed their doors , others serving new and unique offerings from deep-fried favorites and sauce-smothered bites to sweet treats and so much more have opened here in the Daytona Beach area , keeping our stomachs full, spirits high and community thriving.

    While we sadly say our goodbyes to some, we also welcome a plethora of quickly growing, go-to spots . So, if you’re looking to stop in somewhere new for breakfast , lunch or dinner , check out the latest restaurants and cafés that have opened in Volusia-Flagler during the month of April.

    Alexander’s Prime

    Alexander’s Prime opened shop in early April. The upscale, art deco-themed steakhouse sits on Ormond Beach’s bustling Granada Boulevard and offers an “old school” dining experience featuring tiled ceilings, deep wood details, white clothed tables and George Rodrigue Blue Dog artwork.

    Guests are invited to enjoy a lengthy menu of prime and prime dry-aged meats, locally sourced seafood, fresh greens and craft cocktails, with options including but not limited to the prime dry-aged bone-in ribeye, prime Denver cut steak frites and classic hamburger.     Beach Bros Coffee

    Beach Bros Coffee opened at the start of April in Daytona’s historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The charming outdoor café, which operates in partnership with the Daytona Tortugas, is open during game days at the ballpark and prides itself on serving ethically-sourced, freshly roasted Colombian coffee alongside a lengthy menu of Italian-imported pastries, breakfast selections and more. Menu options include chocolate-drizzled cannolis, avocado toast, marshmallow-topped specialty lattes, espresso and classic drip coffee, among others.

    Comfort Café

    Comfort Café opened its doors in downtown DeLand earlier last month. The South Woodland Boulevard eatery offers a unique menu of globally-inspired, fusion cuisine, layered sweets and elevated comfort foods. Several menu options include Caribbean-, Japanese- and Greek-inspired rice bowls, the Caribbean mac and waffle-batter-rolled mac and cheese bites, as well as the Belgian waffle sandwiches, salads and ice cream cookie sandwich. Comfort Café also offers vegan and gluten-free options, and online ordering is available.

    Fresh Catch Seafood

    Fresh Catch Seafood opened shop in Edgewater in early April. The new seafood market and takeout restaurant boasts a packed menu of “fresh, not from the can, not farmed and sustainably sourced” seafood selections, ranging from cold sandwiches /wraps, tacos and po' boys to soups, steamed platters, fried sandwiches and a “build your own box” option.

    Fresh Catch offers an array of daily specials, with precious offerings including blue claw crabs; shrimp and corn chowder; and fried cod loin sandwiches.

    Customers are encouraged to call ahead and place orders to avoid longer wait times. Those who wish to prepare their own meal can also purchase items from the eatery’s fresh fish market.

    Hanwoo Korean BBQ

    Hanwoo Korean BBQ opened for business mid-April. The new Port Orange eatery replaced what was formerly the Mellow Mushroom and offers guests an authentic, interactive dinner experience, where diners utilize the personal grill at the center of each table to cook various meats and sides of their choice.

    The new spot offers both the signature dinner ($48.99 per person) and the classic dinner, ($36.99 per person), which feature a plethora of marinated meats, served communal-style, as well as fresh seafood and range of savory and spiced sides. Meat options range from marinated lamb and pork belly, to hanger steak, gator meat and marinated ribeye (bulgogi). Hanwoo also has a full bar. According to the restaurant’s menu, reservations are accepted for parties of six or more.

    Hi! Boba Tea

    Hi! Boba Tea opened shop in Port Orange in the final weeks of April. The quaint new shop hosts a generous array of refreshing treats, including its large ($6.25) or extra-large ($7.95) milk teas with tapioca boba; cheese teas, combining freshly-brewed Oolong tea, ice and cheese foam — a frothy, whipped topping commonly made from cream cheese, milk, heavy cream and salt; large smoothies; and fruit-layered ice jelly bowls. Non-dairy milk alternatives are also available, including coconut, soy and almond milk.

    JoJo’s Tastes of Chicago

    JoJo’s Tastes of Chicago opened its first permanent location inside Ridgewood Avenue’s Amoco Gas Station in Port Orange last month. The eatery’s menu ranges from the breaded chicken wings and classic Chicago-style tamales to Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, the chili cheese dog and Italian sausage sub. According to JoJo’s Tastes of Chicago’s Facebook page, customers can place their orders ahead of time online at the eatery’s website.

    Mr. Chef Indian Cuisine

    Mr. Chef Indian Cuisine opened for business in Deltona in mid April. The authentic new restaurant invites guests “to explore the rich and diverse flavors of Indian cuisine,” in hopes of “showcasing the best of Indian culinary traditions.”

    The eatery’s limitless menu features everything from seafood, chicken, goat and vegetarian options to various breads, desserts, sides and children’s meals. Selections include the chef special goat curry ($15.99), chicken tikka masala ($14.99), samosa ($6.99), butter naan ($2.99) and fish mango curry ($16.99)

    Oceanside Beach Bar and Grill

    Oceanside Beach Bar and Grill announced the soft opening of its second location in the final weeks of April. The Ormond by the Sea eatery, which replaces what was formerly Betty’s A1A Café, is operating under limited hours with plans for a grand opening in the near future.

    According to its Facebook page , Oceanside offers currently offers the same menu at both locations, with options ranging from the corned beef hash and chicken and waffles to the eggs Benedict, Biker Burger and Corned Beef Slammer.

    Pizzeus

    Pizzeus opened shop within the Daytona Flea and Farmer’s Market in early April. Owner and Italian native Furio Fattori runs the shop Friday through Sunday during market hours, alongside his wife, Irina, originally from Cuba, and their two children.

    The charming new pizzeria offers market visitors a scratch-made selection of authentic Italian cuisine, including 14-inch personal pizzas; large pizzas by the slice; the Panozzo 1 and Panozzo 2 — meat-layered sandwiches encased in the same crisp pizza dough; and the donzelle — described as fried pizza dough, served salted as a savory snack or layered with sugar and chocolate as a dessert.

    Sam’s Coal Fired Pizza

    Sam’s Coal Fi red P izza opened shop at the start of April in Daytona Beach. Though the anticipated, fast-casual pizzeria is owner Sam Tadros’ first brick and mortar location under the brand, many customers already know his pizza well.

    Tadros originally created Sam's Coal Fired Pizza in 2020 as a frozen pizza business that soon catapulted to fame following a notably high 8.4 ranking from Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy — a nationally-known pizza connoisseur, recognized by The New York Times, among other publications. Now, Tadros is serving his slices beachside with everything from Detroit-style pizza , Chicago traditional, Chicago stuffed, Roman, Sicilian and more.

    Volusia-Flagler restaurants that closed in April

    Fysh Bar and Grill

    Fysh Bar and Grill , an expansive, Port Orange restaurant known for its waterfront views and mainly seafood menu, permanently closed its doors last month after less than two years in business .

    As previously reported by The News-Journal , 29-year-old Fysh owner Sidarth Sethi confirmed the restaurant’s closure “in a Facebook Messenger text to The Daytona Beach News-Journal … ‘We had to file for (Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation) because I wasn't able to keep up with the extensive expenses that building requires,’ Sethi wrote. ‘I don't have the financial resources to continue investing into a project that size at this point in my life.’” The restaurant had acquired over $6 million in debt leading up to its closure, as noted in the same News-Journal story .

    Fysh Bar and Grill was located at 3633 S. Ridgewood Ave., in Port Orange.

    Oksa Cakes

    Oksa Cakes said goodbye to its Flagler Beach shop in the final weeks of April. In a Facebook message that the business reposted , realtor Natalia Stroud explained the closure, stating, “It’s the end of the era. My favorite bakery Oksa Cakes is sold and closed and it’s owners Oksana Petrova and Sergei are moving to their new adventure - a restaurant in Ocean Walk Shoppes & Movies Daytona Beach was honored and happy to represent them as both the buyers of the new restaurant and the sellers of Oksa Cakes and I am both happy for starting a new business and a little sad for them leaving Flagler Beach.”

    Oksa Cakes was located at 300 S. Central Ave., Suite 105, in Flagler Beach.

    Woody’s Bar-B-Que

    Following reports on social media that Woody’s Bar-B-Que would be closing its doors in the final week of April, several customers took to the eatery's Facebook comments to express their sadness. Woody's Bar-B-Que liked several users comments, including one that stated, "So sad to see you go. Matt and Melissa and the staff have always been wonderful hosts. This is the close of an era. You will definitely be missed." The Florida Chain's Palm Coast location is also no longer listed on its website for online ordering and users are met with a "not accepting orders" notice after selecting "pickup" . The News-Journal was unable to reach the restaurant via phone or Facebook Messenger for comment before the publishing of this article.

    Woody’s Bar-B-Que was located at 99 Flagler Plaza Drive in Palm Coast.
