DAYTON — A Rhea County man is behind bars after allegedly leaving 294 grams, or 10.37 ounces, of methamphetamine in a Dayton hotel parking lot, according to a report on file at the Dayton Police Department.

Brian Keith Oney is facing charges of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance with the intent to sell after hotel employees reportedly found a bag containing methamphetamine and notified Dayton police officers.

At around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April l6, Dayton Police Department (DPD) Sgt. Josh Jordan and DPD Officer Bobby Huffman responded to a hotel on Rhea County Highway in Dayton after hotel employees allegedly found what they thought to be narcotics in the hotel parking lot.

“[Hotel employees) turned over a black zipper bag that contained what appeared to be several ounces of a white crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine,” DPD Investigator Michael Green said.

Green said that hotel employees then notified him that the parking has surveillance cameras and that whoever dropped the bag would likely be seen on camera. He said that while reviewing footage of the suspect, which allegedly showed Oney placing the bag beside his truck, the suspect exited his room and found officers waiting to interview him.

“Sgt. Jordan asked Mr. Oney about the black zipper bag he set by his truck,” Green said. “Mr. Oney advised he did not know anything about the black zipper bag.”

The report states that Oney gave officers consent to search his vehicle, in which they allegedly found 13 grams of methamphetamine. Combined with the contents of the black zipper bag, Green said that officers found 294 grams of methamphetamine.

Oney was placed under arrest and booked into the Rhea County Jail. According to jail records, he was still incarcerated as of press time Tuesday.
