DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Premier Health is discontinuing the Level III Trauma Center at Miami Valley Hospital South.

According to Premier Health, operations at the center will shut down May 1. Each day, Miami Valley Hospital South sees about three to four trauma patients, according to the healthcare organization.

“While the demand for these services and the proximity of Miami Valley Hospital’s main campus both contributed to this decision, it also reflects the increasing difficulty in sourcing the expertise necessary to staff a Level III trauma center,” said Premier Health.

“Our ongoing focus is to ensure the resources we have are allocated strategically across the Premier Health system to ensure the highest quality care for our patients.”

The emergency department at Miami Valley South will remain open.

Premier Health says they are keeping the Level I Trauma Center open at Miami Valley Hospital. Both Atrium Medical Center in Middletown and Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy will continue to operate with a Level III Trauma Center.
