NAMI Sullivan illuminates mental health awareness with candlelight vigil
MONTICELLO- In recognition of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, caring community members gathered on the Sullivan County Courthouse Lawn in Monticello on Monday evening, May 20th to shed light on Mental Health Awareness. NAMI Sullivan, the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness hosted the event, drawing local politicians, family members, peers, providers and other concerned members of the community. NAMI Sullivan Executive Director, M. Lori Schneider, MS welcomed those gathered, sharing the message that mental illnesses are real, physical illnesses and should be treated as any other. The term “mental” illness might make one think that it’s “all in your mind” – when in fact, they are disorders of the brain, an organ of the body, susceptible to illness like any other. President of NAMI Sullivan, Agahuda Khanii described the importance of the support offered to families – and how crucial it is to be a voice for a population who has not historically had a strong voice.
