Strawberry Festival still seeking crafters
St. Philip’s Church, 12 Hodge St., Wiscasset, invites craftspeople to join with the likes of hand stenciled items, cat toys, or wood turned goods at its Strawberry Festival 70 on Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As the Festival will be taking place primarily out-of-doors, crafters are offered the opportunity, for a fee of $25, to have a 10X10 space on the church grounds designated for their use. Craftspeople should plan on bringing their own canopies to shield against the elements as well as display materials and tables.

Sarah Sherman McGrail is Memorial Day grand marshal
Sarah Sherman McGrail is 2024’s Boothbay Region Memorial Day Parade grand marshal. Sarah, a seventh generation Southport Island native, founded her own publishing house in 1996. She has since written and self-published multiple books specific to the Boothbay region and its veterans, with journals and memoirs telling stories from World War II and beyond.

Southport Column: Bridge, Gift Barn and more
Last week I wrote that the Southport Bridge would be opening on the hour and half hour beginning May 17, which is what was planned. But I learned on Monday that due to electrical difficulties the openings did not happen. They hope to have the repairs to the necessary electrical equipment done in the next few days, so perhaps the bridge will open soon to marine traffic. Of course, those of us who drive frequently across the the bridge are content to see the boat traffic schedule delayed as that means our delays are shorter.

The next public supper will be June 5. The menu will consist of minestrone soup, salad, garlic bread, cheese ravioli, and ricotta cake. The cost is $10 for members and $12 for non-members. On Memorial Day and every day, let us not forget but reflect on, with respect, the men and women who gave their ultimate sacrifice in all wars. I would like to recognize the brothers, these brave men, who gave everything in the Vietnam War from this region (all but Edward Tibbetts appear on the Vietnam Wall):

George Chase elected as Edgecomb selectman
George Chase has added another title to his collection. In the past year, Chase has served as Edgecomb’s code enforcement officer and school committee member. On May 17, he became a selectman. Chase defeated Timothy Harrington, 92-7, in the municipal election. Chase resigned as CEO and school committee member prior to Friday’s election.
CTL celebrates spring with student concert
Students in kindergarten through fourth grades at Edgecomb's Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) put on a joyful spring concert on the evening of Wednesday, May 15. With help from local musician Kaity Newel and CTL's own Annie Nixon, students learned and rehearsed several songs celebrating spring and CTL's science units of study.
