Dallas Cowboys alone among city's sports teams as Mavericks make latest point

The Dallas Cowboys are now the only major professional sports team in their region that has failed to reach the conference championship round of the playoffs in the last two years.

The Dallas Mavericks confirmed their spot in the Western Conference Finals after defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder in six games to end their long drought away from a championship game. Meanwhile, the Dallas Stars made the conference finals this past week in the NHL.

And this past year, the Texas Rangers (based in Dallas), won it's first-ever World Series after defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks . However, the Cowboys last made a championship game in 1995 - having one of sports' biggest droughts despite coming into the majority of its seasons as one of the contenders.

The Cowboys looked to be among the favorites in the 2023 season, coming into the first round of the playoffs as big favorites against the Green Bay Packers - but were humiliated by Jordan Love and company.

Dallas' dismal postseason now stands at just four wins in the last 25 years, with 11 losses in that time, with huge pressure mounting on the likes of head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Dak Prescott as each year passes. Should the Cowboys fail to win a playoff game, or even get to a championship game in 2024, owner Jerry Jones will likely make changes.

The Mavericks, however, have truly turned their fortunes around one year after missing the playoffs with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving on the roster.

The Mavs defeated the number-one seed Thunder after the two aforementioned players starred throughout the series, with Doncic putting up a triple-double with 29 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the final game of the series.

However, Doncic was quick to praise his teammates, stating: “They're going to talk about me and Kyrie, but no, it was the team. This team's collective in these playoffs has been incredible, we are a team! PJ [Washington] was unbelievable, and we wouldn't win this series without Lively, we wouldn't win without that boy!"

Dallas will now face the winner of the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves matchup, with the Mavericks in a great position to win their first title in 13 years.
