The Dallas Cowboys have not exactly managed their running back room all that well this offseason.

The Cowboys allowed Tony Pollard to walk in free agency, but were unable to replace him. Many expected them to pursue Derrick Henry, but financial constraints made it difficult.

Some then anticipated that Dallas would select a halfback in the NFL Draft, and Texas standout Jonathon Brooks appeared to be on the club’s radar.

However, Brooks ended up going to the Carolina Panthers in the early stages of the second round, and the Cowboys ended up not drafting a running back altogether.

Dallas made sort of a panic move after the draft and brought back Ezekiel Elliott, who is certainly not an every-down back at this stage of his career.

Right now, the Cowboys have Elliott, Deuce Vaughn and Rico Dowdle in their backfield, which is certainly not an enviable situation.

Dallas still has time between now and Week 1 to address the running back position, but it’s slim pickings on the free-agent market, meaning the Cowboys may have to consider a trade.

That’s why Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay thinks they should pursue a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers for Najee Harris.

The Steelers recently declined to exercise Harris’ fifth-year option, meaning he will be a free agent after next season. This has created trade speculation around Harris, especially after the year fellow halfback Jaylen Warren had for Pittsburgh in 2023.

It should be noted that the Steelers don’t appear interested in trading Harris at the moment, but things could change as the offseason progresses.

Kay suggests that Dallas trades a 2025 fourth-round draft pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for Harris.

While Harris is not an elite running back, he is certainly better than what the Cowboys currently have on their depth chart, and he has logged three straight 1,000-yard campaigns to begin his career.

This past year, Harris registered 1,035 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging 4.1 yards per carry. His best season, though, came during his rookie campaign in 2021, when he racked up 1,200 yards and seven scores on the ground while also hauling in 71 receptions for 467 yards and three touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl for his efforts that season.

Plus, the 26-year-old has yet to miss a game in his NFL tenure.

We’ll see if the Cowboys try and make a play for Harris in the coming weeks.
