The Dallas Cowboys , facing an offseason with running back as a major need, chose to bypass signing superstar free agent running back Derrick Henry, despite his workhorse ability and a clear need at the position.

Instead, the team welcomed back former star Ezekiel Elliott on a modest one-year deal valued at approximately $3 million. This decision was part of a broader strategy outlined by Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones during an appearance on Mad Dog Sports Radio with host Adam Schein.

Jones explained that financial constraints influenced the team’s decision-making process.

“We just didn’t have the dollars to allocate to the running back position.”

If funds had permitted, the Cowboys would have preferred to retain Tony Pollard, who ultimately signed a three-year contract with Tennessee.

Pollard’s departure and Henry’s subsequent signing with the Baltimore Ravens for a two-year, $16 million deal left the Cowboys to reassess their options. Henry’s new partnership with Lamar Jackson in Baltimore marks a significant shift in the Ravens’ offensive dynamics, contrasting sharply with Dallas’ approach.

In Dallas, the focus will now shift to a committee of backs comprising Elliott, promising young back Deuce Vaughn, and seasoned veteran Royce Freeman. This trio is expected to spearhead the Cowboys’ ground game, which last season ranked 14th in the NFL under Mike McCarthy’s offense.

The reliance on a group effort, rather than a single standout running back, suggests a strategic move and a hopeful outlook that Elliott can return to form with a larger role in 2024.

As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for the 2024 season, much will depend on quarterback Dak Prescott’s performance, especially given the team’s transition to a running back-by-committee approach. This strategy, necessitated by financial and tactical considerations, will test McCarthy’s offensive scheme and could potentially redefine the Cowboys’ offensive identity.

Missing out on Derrick Henry was a tough pill to swallow, but that could get even tougher if the Cowboys’ backfield is unable to produce. Opposing defenses will certainly focus on shutting down Prescott and the passing game first and foremost each and every week.
