Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Office says suicide attempts are rising at the jail
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office says there’s been a notable rise in suicide attempts at the jail. So far, 15 attempts have been reported this year. The sheriff’s office says in all of 2023 there were 19 attempts and in 2022 the sheriff’s office successfully intervened to stop 24 attempts. One man, William Rhinesmith, did die by suicide in 2022. Rhinesmith, 47, was found hanging in his cell. A state inspection indicated officers missed nearly one-fifth of mandated safety checks in the 36 hours surrounding his death.
