Where a Juvenile Hall Once Stood, Area 1 Candidates Make Their Case
On October 10, I went to Farber Educational Campus with a recorder in my handbag and a bit of election season cynicism. Many election forums can seem similar. This location is far from typical. Farber, Fresno Unified’s roughly $65 million alternative education campus, sits on the former Fresno County Juvenile Hall, which closed in 2006 and was torn down in 2019. Walking in, I felt that this space had not yet completely forgotten its past. Somewhere under the brand-new paint and career pathway banners this old land still seemed to be listening, wondering what the grownups would say about kids now. On the other hand, I also saw a monument to progress. Ever since I was a teenager, I have advocated against the school-to-prison pipeline, and this was a visceral representation of my goals, especially since the demolition lined up with my own senior year of high school.
