Columbus RiverWalk: 34 Years of History, 22 Miles of Trails and the Transformation of 2 Cities
Columbus, Georgia, opened the first mile of its Chattahoochee RiverWalk on Oct. 12, 1992, beginning a transformation that eventually produced a 22-mile recreational corridor along the river. Across the water, Phenix City, Alabama, developed its own riverfront trail, creating a connected recreation area that links two cities, two states and generations of local history.

3 Columbus Landmarks Tell 155 Years of History: The Springer, Liberty Theatre and a 390-Building Historic District
Columbus, Georgia, has three historic places that tell very different stories about the city's development: the Springer Opera House, which opened in 1871; the Liberty Theatre, built for Black audiences in 1925; and the Columbus Historic District, whose preservation records document hundreds of buildings dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Together, they reveal how entertainment, segregation, architecture and preservation helped shape the city.

Columbus actress takes audition risk, lands role in TV show that reaches No. 1 on Netflix
Brandy Wells-Martin, a Phenix City Elementary School third-grade teacher and actress from Columbus, watched “A Different World,” a spinoff of “The Cosby Show” that aired on TV from 1987 to 1993, as a teenager. The show, which centers around student life at Hillman College, a fictional HBCU, had a profound impact on Wells-Martin. “That show encouraged me to go to college,” Wells-Martin told the Ledger-Enquirer. “It showed me what it’s like to be a part of a sorority, to marry the love of your life with Dwayne and Whitley. I learned a lot from that show growing up.” “A Different World” returned in 2026 with a 10-episode reboot produced by dancer, actress and director Debbie Allen. Wells-Martin is a dancer and a featured extra in the reboot’s first season. VJ Roberts of Columbus is also an extra in the reboot but told the L-E she could not speak about her involvement in the project because of a nondisclosure agreement. Wells-Martin was featured in Tyler Perry’s 2009 film “Madea Goes to Jail” and played an engineer in the 2016 movie “Hidden Figures.” She previously taught in Spencer High School’s dance program. She began performing at 11 years old when her mom

‘Some twist, some turns. Nothing is as it seems.' Southern Gothic thriller opens in Columbus
The Springer Opera House production of “Covenant,” a Southern Gothic thriller by York Walker runs Oct. 16-24 in the Springer’s McClure Theatre, known as “The Dot.” It’s the first Studio II Series production of the 2026-27 season in Columbus. The show is recommended for ages 16 and older because it contains mature content, including depictions and discussions of violence, sex and sexuality, strong language and alcohol use. Keith McCoy, the Springer’s artistic director and director for “Covenant,” answered questions about the show before an Oct. 14 dress rehearsal. Here are excerpts from the interview, edited for brevity and clarity.

Swamp It Like It’s Hot
Certain films and franchises have long captivated the queer community and are often turned into drag shows. One such franchise is the iconic Shrek series. On Sept. 26, I had the pleasure of attending the Shrek Drag show presented by Muscogee Queer, an organization that builds Pride and acts as a safe space for everyone. I picked up my friend, and we walked on over to Chattabrewchee.

At 92, Cecil Calhoun still walks the course that shaped his legacy
COLUMBUS, Ga. — Cecil Calhoun's golf seat stick left small indentations in the putting green as he moved around to watch the action Monday at the Country Club of Columbus. Calhoun was using it more as a walker, but I doubt whether he even needed the assistance. To those in Columbus, the second largest town by population in Georgia, Calhoun is a legend. Now 92 years old, he graduated from Columbus High School in 1952, played on the LSU men's golf team and won a national championship in 1955 before serving his country as a colonel in the U.S. Air Force. And this week, the lifetime member at the Country Club of Columbus was waltzing around the putting green, bouncing between watching the groups on the 12th and 18th greens while taking in tee shots from the first and 10th, too. All of these shots are ones Calhoun has hit thousands of times, though he can't quite guess just how many rounds he has accumulated over his life. He has been playing here neatly a century, and this week he watched as his home course hosted the 2026 Haskins Intercollegiate, a premier women's college golf event, for the first time.

Linwood Cemetery is Columbus' oldest institution - and the Ramble celebrates its story
The oldest institution in Columbus isn’t a building or a structure. It’s Linwood Cemetery, established in 1828 — the same year as the birth of the city — after the son of the surveyor died during the work. Nearly 200 years later, the Historic Linwood Foundation continues to preserve this site. Its annual Linwood Ramble, an evening of food, music and guided walks through the grounds, will be Oct. 15, starting at 4 p.m., and this year’s theme is “ Secretive Symbols in Plain Sight.” Ahead of this year’s Ramble, the Ledger-Enquirer spoke with Elliott Waddell, president of the Board of Trustees for Historic Linwood Inc. We asked him about this year’s event and the history and importance of the cemetery, which he said includes “Academy Award winners, soldiers, [and] philanthropists” and many names integral to Columbus’ culture and community. Linwood’s story begins with the city’s first loss Surveyor Edward Lloyd Thomas came to the falls of the Chattahoochee River in 1828 with his son, Truman. Truman died that March, and Thomas buried him on a bluff above the future town, citing the foundation’s history. That ground became the City Cemetery, and it took the name Linwood from a nearby

This Historic Georgia Theater Still Brings Golden-Age Movie Magic To Its Downtown Stage
Going to the movies used to be an event. People dressed up. Ushers carried flashlights. Grand chandeliers glowed above rows of plush seats. The building itself was part of the show. Few of those theaters survive today. This one in Georgia refused to fade. Its marquee still glows downtown. Inside,...
