Pierz punches ticket to state with win over Pequot Lakes

Pierz football traveled to Brainerd High School Nov. 5 to take on Pequot Lakes in the Section 7AAA Championship game. The Pioneers were undefeated and looked to keep their streak alive while earning another trip to the Minnesota State Football Tournament. Pierz was able to defeat Pequot Lakes 54-15. Pierz earned another trip to the state tournament behind another strong offensive performance and a dominant defensive effort. An offense that has put up a lot of points all season continued to do the same against a good Patriots defense. The Pioneers' defense helped give the offense good field position, recording five interceptions and recovering one fumble. The offense was led by Brayden Foust, who had nine carries for 208 yards and three touchdowns. Preston Saehr completed six of seven passes for 151 yards. Parker Kimman had three carries for 91 yards and one touchdown, while Sawyer Lochner added four carries for 41 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Kimman led the receivers with three receptions for 124 yards and one touchdown. The Pioneers will await the state tournament brackets to find out their next opponent. Patriots punch ticket to state for third straight year

Upsala/Swanville Area traveled to the Fargodome Nov. 6 to take on Benson in the Section 5A Championship. The Patriots defeated Benson 54-7 in week two of the regular season. Upsala/Swanville was looking for the same result to remain undefeated and punch its ticket to the state tournament for the third year in a row. The Patriots were able to do just that as they defeated Benson 36-12 to earn a trip to the state tournament. Upsala/Swanville jumped out to an early 8-0 lead. Benson quickly cut the lead to 8-6 before the Patriots extended their advantage to 22-6 by halftime. Benson tried to make a comeback in the second half, cutting the Patriots' lead to 22-12. However, Upsala/Swanville held on to win 36-12, earning its third straight section championship and state tournament appearance. The Patriots will play Nov. 13, with the location and opponent still to be determined.
