Gaylord football turns in a Gaylord-classic, wins overtime thriller over Marquette
GAYLORD ― Gaylord football and thrilling, down-to-the-wire, come-from-behind, one-score victories are a match made in heaven. Since the 2022 season, GHS football has played in 12 one-score games, winning nine of those games in a strikingly similar fashion: falling behind early, mounting a comeback and winning on the final play of the game. They've continued that trend into the Matt Silsbury era, winning the first two games of the 2025 season by one touchdown each. And, after trailing 14-7 to Marquette early on September 13, the Blue Devils did it again, coming back to beat the Sentinels 28-27 in an overtime thriller. "We knew Marquette was going to be a tough team. That's a very good football team, and we knew we were going to be in for a battle," said coach Matt Silsbury following the win. "At the end of the day, we had to execute again, and I keep saying this, we're getting better every week. Nothing's perfect, but we're getting better." Gaylord finishes off comeback win in overtime GHS took the first lead of the game, using a three-yard touchdown run from senior Kaven Cole to go up 7-0. Marquette would respond, however, using a 13-yard TD

Zeeland East football catches rhythm in win over Alpena to remain unbeaten
ZEELAND - Rhythm plays a huge role in an offense, especially between the quarterback and receivers. Zeeland East's Will Drnek and Isaiah Boonstra found that rhythm early on Saturday, Sept. 13, and connected for a couple of touchdowns perfectly in stride, propelling the Chix to a 35-0 win over Alpena at Zeeland Stadium. "It is a lot of preparation. Creating that connection with my quarterback is what is getting us here," Boonstra said. "Will's throw is butter and you couldn't ask for anything better. It felt really good." In the second quarter, Drnek threw a 34-yard touchdown strike to Boonstra. Gaylord football, new coach Matt Silsbury start 2025 with victory over North Branch
GAYLORD ― Leading up to his debut game as Gaylord football head coach, Matt Silsbury was preaching a focus on fundamentals, not wins and losses. Even still, a win like he just got in his first game leading the Blue Devils had to feel pretty good. Welcoming in a strong North Branch team to start the 2025 season on Thursday, Aug. 28, Gaylord had to handle a potent option offense and move the ball on a strong Broncos defense. It wasn't pretty, nor was it perfect, but the Blue Devils did just enough to help coach Silsbury start his Gaylord tenure 1-0, defeating North Branch 21-14. "Like I said all week, this is a tough team, they execute. The option is a tough scheme to defend," said Silsbury. "We had to come out and play disciplined football, and that's what they did. I'm proud of our guys." Top performers: JoBurg volleyball wins home tournament, Peppin picks up career win No. 500 VOTE: Who will be the top Gaylord-area football player in 2025? Newly expanded building to foster a sense of community for Otsego Christian School
GAYLORD — Construction on the new 14,000-square-foot addition for the Otsego Christian School will finish soon. The school, located at 1377 M-32 East, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14 to formally unveil the building. The $3.6 million addition includes six new classrooms, a special ed/resource center, a gymnasium/chapel, new offices, restroom facilities and additional storage. "To me (this addition) is unifying what we had this past year when we were all spread out," said principal John Lieto. "This will give us a more centralized location physically but also brings everyone together. It was hard at times to have interaction among students, teachers and staff (during construction). This gives us that sense of community that we are striving to grow here because the kids really do much better when they see all that we are able to provide." More: Otsego Christian School addition to double size of building The new building connects to the school's existing building via an enclosed walkway. New Gaylord football head coach Matt Silsbury ingrained in high school football culture
GAYLORD ― With every football season comes some sort of change, as new players mix with veterans while the program progresses year by year. This season, the Gaylord football team is undergoing its own unique style of change. Moving on from DJ Szymoniak, the program's fourth-winningest head coach from 2021-24, the Blue Devils are in their first season under new head coach Matt Silsbury, previously a head coach at Houghton Lake and an assistant for the past three years under Szymoniak. Using his familiarity with the program, Gaylord hopes to continue to build on what it has done well over the past four years while trying to improve on where they've struggled. "We've been pretty good defensively for a long time here, and I've been part of those defensive efforts, so part of my thought process was, 'If it's not broke, don't fix it,'" said Silsbury. "Obviously, with any transition, there's going to be some change. There's going to be some new wrinkles, there's going to be some things different. But at the end of the day, there's been a solid foundation built here and put in place. We're going to build upon that." St. Mary football preview: Youth, depth
