( KRON ) — An 11-year-old girl has died after she was struck by a suspected DUI driver in Cupertino, a Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said.

The girl was one of four children who were standing on a sidewalk April 27 when a silver Mazda pickup truck plowed into the group, investigators said. The girl was rushed to a hospital where she clung to life for several days. On Monday, the Sheriff’s Office told KRON4 that the girl passed away from her injuries.

The other injured children, ages 8, 7, and 4, survived.

Adam Wu, 38, of Cupertino, was allegedly under the influence of narcotics when his pickup truck crashed into another vehicle, struck a power pole, and collided into the children , according to SCCSO.

Investigators said the crash scene at Foothill Boulevard and Stevens Creek Boulevard was “horrific,” and many witnesses in the area called 911.

Deputies arrested Wu on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs causing bodily injury.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not only against the law, but it puts the lives of everyone in danger,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote.

Wu bailed out of jail last week, and he remained out of custody as of Monday, inmate records show.

So far, no criminal charges have been filed against Wu. A Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said detectives are waiting for a toxicology report to be completed before the case is handed to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office for review.
