Jefferson County residents are demanding changes to a dangerous stretch of Highway 97 near Madras. On Wednesday, the public, in a united effort, provided their valuable suggestions for making Highway 97 safer between the High Bridge and Madras. According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, that area has seen a high number of crashes compared to the rest of the state, higher than the average crash rate. Between 2017 and 2021, there were 187 crashes along that stretch, 13 of them being severe injuries and seven fatalities.

The way Redmond residents dump their trash is about to change. Negus Transfer Station is preparing to open a $20 million indoor disposal facility in May. Redmond residents currently dump their trash at the station from a cliff and into huge trailers that haul the waste away.
